Datto Networking: How does POE work?

Follow

Power over ethernet (POE) works by sending power across a couple pairs of ethernet wires that are not being utilized in the CAT5 (or CAT6) cable.  If a unit is POE capable you won't need to run a power supply from the unit to a power outlet.

This is advantageous if you wish to place a unit in a spot where power is not readily available, and running a power cable is cumbersome.  In this case, the Ethernet cable will be all you need to power the unit.
