How does Power over Ethernet (PoE) work?

PoE works by leveraging a compatible switch to send power across pairs of Ethernet wires that are not in use in the Category 5 or Category 6 cable. If a network node is PoE-enabled, you won't need to run a power supply from the connected device to a power outlet.

Using PoE is advantageous when you need to place a device in a location where power is not readily available, and running a power cable would be cumbersome. Instead, the Ethernet cable is all you need.

If your device doesn’t support PoE, you may be able to add power to your network through the use a PoE injector. For more information, refer to Understanding Power over Ethernet (PoE) injectors.
