Storage Migration vs a Device Migration

Question

What is the difference between a storage migration and a device migration?

NOTE  Be advised that Device Migration and Storage Migration features on BCDR devices have entered a planned maintenance phase and have been removed as of IRIS 4.12.5 release in March of 2022. See Device Migration and Storage Migration Maintenance

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS
  • Datto ALTO
  • Datto NAS

Answer

Storage Migration

In a storage migration scenario, an operator can perform a field upgrade or a hardware replacement of one or more hard drives in a Datto appliance by using the Migrate Storage tool. Consider a Storage Migration if you:

  • Want to expand the storage capacity on your existing Datto appliance.
  • Need to replace one or more of your Datto appliance's hard drives that are in a pre-failure state.

Contact Datto Technical Support if you need to replace a storage component that has failed completely.

Device Migration

In a device migration scenario, an operator transfers local and cloud backups and device settings from one Datto appliance to another. You can migrate all agents or just some of the agents from the source device to the new device. When performing a device migration, both the source and target device must be on the same network, in a functional state, and capable of completing all steps in the migration process.

Consider a device migration if you are replacing one Datto appliance with another, or need to transfer user settings and data from one Datto device to another.

IMPORTANT  To transfer data from an existing appliance to another Datto device that already has agent data on it, both devices need to be using the same offsite server. If the offsite servers are not the same, contact Datto Technical Support to assist.
