What happens if we hit Google's daily API limit?

Follow

For some Google services and for some customers, Google has daily limits on how much data we can backup per day over the API. Due to these bandwidth restrictions, Backupify has to limit the amount of records that we back up in a job. The only services that currently have bandwidth restrictions from Google are the Gmail and Sites services.

But, for a majority of our customers (and any customers who started service with us after 2016), we use REST API-based backups for Gmail. With the REST API, we do not have the per day limit for backups that's explained below. Please contact Backupify Support to confirm whether or not your domain's Gmail services are backed up with the REST API.

For Gmail Backups:

Depending on the size of your Gmail account, it can take several days to backup the entire account. We have to limit the amount of Gmail backups to about 1.5GB per day. Google restricts the amount of data that can be accessed via IMAP per account per day and if that data threshold is crossed then Google can cut off IMAP access for your account. Due to this restriction we throttle our backups to only pull about 1.5GB of emails records per day per Gmail account. So, for larger Gmail accounts it can take days for the initial Gmail backup to complete.

Once the initial backup finally completes then the subsequent incremental jobs will complete much faster as they are only pulling over new and updated records from you account; that is assuming you have less than 1.5GB of new emails per day.

For Sites Backups:

Depending on the size of your Sites data on your domain, it can take several days to backup the entire account. We have to limit the amount of Sites backups to about 1.0GB per day. Google restricts the amount of Sites data that can be accessed for your entire domain per day and if that data threshold is crossed then Google can cut off your domain's Sites access for 24 hours. Due to this restriction we throttle our backups to only pull 1.0GB of Sites records per day for the entire domain. So, for domains with a lot of Sites data, it can take days for the initial Gmail backup to complete.

Once the initial backup finally completes then the subsequent incremental jobs will complete much faster as they are only pulling over new and updated records from you account; that is assuming you have less than 1.0GB of new or updated Sites data per day in your domain.

This is not ideal but it is Google's policy and there is nothing we can do to get around it and backup everything in one job. If we could pull the user's full mailbox or your domain's entire Sites data in one job then we would.
