Registering a Datto Backup Appliance

Follow

Topic

This article describes the procedure to register a Datto backup device. For Datto Networking products, see Accessing your Cloud-Managed AP, Switch, or DNA.

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS
  • Datto ALTO
  • Datto NAS

Overview

The registration process creates a permanent link between the Datto appliance and the Datto Cloud, allowing for data replication to the Cloud. Once the appliance starts communicating with Datto's monitoring servers, the device appears in the Datto Partner Portal. While connected to Datto's servers with an active subscription, it will receive automatic updates for the Datto OS.

Registration Prerequisites

To successfully connect to Datto's registration servers, download updates, and perform cloud replication, your Datto appliance's environment must meet the SIRIS, Alto & DNAS Networking And Bandwidth Requirements.

To register the Datto device, open your web browser on a machine on the local network. Navigate to device.dattobackup.com, and you will see your Datto appliance in the list (if you have more than one), or you will see the registration page (if only one Datto appliance exists on the LAN).

  • If you are registering a virtual appliance, proceed to the Virtual Products Registration section of this article. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

Registration Process

Device Updates

The Datto appliance will automatically attempt to obtain a DHCP address, and then download and install updates, as shown in Figure 1. If the initial network check fails, or if DHCP is not available on your network, your device will display the error message shown in Figure 2. When the device updates complete, the appliance will reboot, and display the Configure Device screen shown in Figure 3.

On the Configure Device page, you will be prompted to complete the following fields:

  1. Device Name: Specify the hostname of the Datto appliance. Device hostnames containing special characters or spaces are not valid. If you need to change the appliance's hostname in the future, you can do so from the Networking page of the device GUI.
  2. Administrator Credentials: Create a local user account which will have full administrator-level access to the entire Datto appliance. You can add additional, limited-access user accounts from the Device Settings page.
    • Note: When registering a Datto device, do not use the administrator and/or admin as the username. This could cause the registration to appear to succeed even while not being registered in the Partner Portal.
  3. Client Organization: Select the client environment you will be deploying this device into. If you do not see your client's name in the Client Organization drop-down, you can add it on the Manage Clients section of the Partner Portal.
  4. Offsite Data Storage Location: Select the geographic region you would like your device to replicate its offsite data to. The options are:
    • Australia
    • Canada
    • Germany
    • Singapore
    • United Kingdom
    • United States
  5. Time Zone: Select the local time zone the device will be operating in. You can change this later from the Device Settings page.
  6. Click Allow installation of third party drivers and software to allow your device to receive critical updates.
  7. Click Complete Registration. Allow the web browser to refresh on its own. Then, proceed to the Next Steps section of this article.

Virtual Products Registration

1. Enter your virtual Product Authorization Code on the Authorize Service page, and then click Next.

  6. Click Allow installation of third party drivers and software to allow your device to receive critical updates.
  7. Click Complete Registration. Allow the web browser to refresh on its own. Then, proceed to the Next Steps section of this article.

You will be redirected to the Datto appliance's dashboard. You should see a yellow banner stating "No hypervisor connections have been configured yet. Please add a connection." Follow the steps detailed in this article to configure the connection. This step is REQUIRED to have production machine screenshots and for virtualization on Virtual SIRIS.

Next Steps

Once you have registered your device, if you are setting up a SIRIS or ALTO, follow the Agent Installation Wizard article for instructions to pair protected machines for backup to the Datto appliance. For Datto NAS, follow the steps in the Creating a share on a Datto NAS Device article to continue.
