How do I use Backup Insights in the Remote Web interface?
- Datto ALTO
- Datto SIRIS
This article explains the Backup Insights screen in the Remote Web interface. Backup Insights tracks the changes between any two recovery points on your Datto Device for a given agent. It shows the files that changed between the points and allows for instant restore of those files directly from the web interface.
Backup Insights simultaneously mounts two points and calculates the differences between them. This is useful when you are trying to determine why significant data churn occurrs between backups or troubleshoot what event may have occurred between backups to cause data discrepancy.
To view the Backup Insights screen for a given device, load the device Remote Web and click the Advanced tab and select Backup Insights. You will then see the screen as shown in Figure 1.
Note: Please use Firefox or Chrome browsers for this feature. Internet Explorer is not supported for this feature.

How to Use Backup Insights
- Choose an agent to compare recovery points
- Choose the two recovery points that you want to compare.
- Click Start Comparison
The recovery points will be mounted and the comparison will be rendered on the screen. This may take a moment to complete, especially for agents with large and/or many volumes, because the comparison needs to traverse the entire file system and track the changes.
Interpreting the Results of a Comparison
The results of a Backup Insights comparison is shown in Figure 2 below.
Figure 2: Results of a Backup Insights comparison
The resulting comparison displays every file that was modified, added, and/or removed between the two snapshots of this Agent.
Note: Since the Windows directories of servers can have many changes and/or be very large, by default, the Datto will not automatically compare the two. If a Windows directory is clicked to view, you can choose to run the comparison again on the system, including the Windows directories.
You can restore either version of a file by clicking the filename displayed, or dragging the file to the local system you are accessing the SIRIS 2 interface from.
The Legend button displays a guide to the file icons shown in the filesystem tree, as shown in Figure 3.
