Device Upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04

1. Introduction

This article explains the steps involved in the process to upgrade a Datto device from Linux Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 12.04. This update requires a reboot of the device.

2. Preparation

The device upgrader will attempt to verify that the unit is not being used for any purposes related to disaster recovery or backup verification before running. If the upgrader detects the device is being used to export disk images, perform a file-level restore, run screenshot verification, or virtualize a protected machine, it will abort the upgrade process.

To check for active restores and virtualizations, log into the device web interface and click the "RESTORE" link in the main menu bar at the top of the page:

If there are active recoveries listed, confirm they are no longer in use and that all necessary work is saved, then click "Remove Restore" for each item.

The upgrade process also relies on the Datto's ability to download packages and package manifests. The packaging system on the Datto will perform a checksum on all downloaded packages and package manifests and stop the upgrade process if a mismatch is found. Therefore, it is important to add exceptions to any firewall, web filter, or other network security device that may block, filter, or alter traffic going to or from the Datto device for the following domains/protocols:

  •* (https)

3. Procedure

To upgrade your device, open Remote Web. You should see a banner that tells you to run the update, as shown in Figure 1.

You can start the update process by clicking the upgrade your device's operating system link. Alternatively, you can click on the Configure tab, and then click Device Update.

The page should look similar to Figure 2.

Check the box in the Select Updates column, and then click Start Update.

If you get a message stating that the upgrade cannot occur because of active recovery points, see this article.

You will get a message explaining that the process will take some time and require a reboot, as shown in Figure 3.

Click the Upgrade Now button to start the process. You will then see a progress bar, as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4 - Upgrade Process

This part of the upgrade process may take anywhere from 45 minutes to more than an hour to complete. Since the Datto device must download packages as part of the upgrade process, sites with low available bandwidth may experience significantly longer upgrade times. However, it will not need further intervention from you. When the process finishes, Remote Web will display the box as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5 - Rebooting Device

After the reboot process is complete, refresh the web browser. You will see the window as shown in Figure 6. This indicates that the device successfully upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04.
