Using the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment Boot Configuration Utililty



This article explains how to diagnose and repair a Windows boot configuration using the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment. This article assumes that you have created and booted the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment ISO on the machine you wish to repair.


Follow these steps to repair a Windows boot configuration.

1. In the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment, click the Disk Map tab, and verify that there are disks present to work with, and that they have a partition and filesystem. Then, click Tools → Boot Configuration Utility.

2. You will then see the Boot Configuration Utility window. Uncheck the box for Hide Advanced Options. Then, select the option for Additional Boot Tools. Click the Diagnose button on the right side, as shown in Figure 2.

3. Once you have a diagnosis, you can try repairing the boot configuration.

4. Depending on the type of error, you may need to switch to BCD Tools mode, as shown in Figure 4.

5. For the target machine to boot correctly, the Boot Configuration Utility needs to show Bootable in the Status field, and a partition needs to be Active with a Windows folder and a Boot Loader present.

To repair the operating system's existing boot loader, or to inject new boot loaders, use the Repair BCD or Install BCD features for Windows Vista, Server 2008 and later. Use the Install NTLDR feature to inject new boot loaders into legacy operating systems.
