SIRIS Restore Options

Scope

This article explains the different recovery types available on a SIRIS, with explanations and use cases for each type.

Starting a Restore

To start a restore, log into the web interface for the SIRIS, and click the Restore tab at the top of the screen. You will see the Restore from a Backup or Snapshot screen, as shown in Figure 1.

This screen represents the first three steps in the recovery process:

  • Choose a protected system or share.
  • Choose a recovery type.
  • Choose a recovery point.

The following table shows the available recovery options for each type of protected machine or share.

Recovery Types

This section explains each recovery type and gives examples of when you'd want to use them.

File Restore

Consider a file restore if you do not need to virtualize or perform a Bare Metal Restore of a machine. If you only need to retrieve data, this option is quicker and easier than the other options.

It is the only option available for NAS Shares.

Local Virtualization

Use a Local Virtualization when you need continuous operation of a protected system, and the SIRIS is available and has the computing resources available to virtualize the system. 

This option is available for Windows and Linux protected machines.

Virtualize in the Cloud

Use this option when you need continuous operation of a protected system, your restore point is already in the Cloud, you have adequate bandwidth, and you want to use the computing resources of the Datto Cloud, rather than your SIRIS.

This option is available for Windows and Linux protected machines.

Virtualize via ESXi

Use this option when you need continuous operation of a protected system, have a hypervisor connection to VMware, and you want to use the computing power of your ESXi host to virtualize the protected system while using the SIRIS as a data store.

One caveat to this option is that you might have issues with disk I/O when virtualizing multiple machines.

This option is available for Windows and Linux protected machines.

ESXi Upload

This option uploads a restore point to a connected ESXi host via VMware Converter. Use this option if you want to use the ESXi host for computing power and as a datastore. Depending on the size of your datastore, this may take a while to transfer, but once it is transferred, there is no disk I/O burden on the SIRIS, nor need for adequate bandwidth between the SIRIS and the ESXi host. The datastore is thick provisioned on the ESXi host, which increases the speed of the virtualization.

This option is available for Windows and Linux protected machines.

Export Image

Use this option to export the recovery point to vSphere Hypervisor (via VMDK) or Microsoft Hyper-V (via VHD). You can export to an attached USB drive or a Network Share (CIFS/Samba or NFS)

This option is available for Windows and Linux protected machines.

iSCSI Restore

Use this option if you want to restore an iSCSI file share to a secondary iSCSI target.

iSCSI Rollback

Use this option if you want to rollback an iSCSI share to a previous recovery point. All data added after the chosen recovery point will be destroyed.
