How can I export data from Datto SaaS Protection/Backupify 2.0 for G Suite?

Exporting allows an administrator to store a secure package of an individual’s data outside of G Suite. For example, if an executive is leaving the company and the company wants to keep track of all their records, Backupify 2.0/Datto SaaS Protection for G Suite can export their correspondence, contact lists, and Google Drive/Team Drive files.

Selecting a service

You can perform an export of any G Suite service Backupify 2.0/Datto SaaS Protection for G Suite has backed up. Select any feature from the main Google Backup Status screen or the top navigational bar, as shown in Figure 1.

Viewing snapshots of Team Drives

For Google Team Drives only, after selecting the service, a list of Team Drives associated with your account will display instead, as shown in Figure 1. Click any Team Drive to view its contents.

For historical Team Drives snapshots taken before 2019-03-15, click Google Drive, select a user that has access to the desired Team Drive, then choose the folder representing it. For more information, read this article.

Initiating an Export

When exporting items, you can select individual or multiple items and save them by clicking the Export button, as shown in Figure 3.

You can also search through different snapshots for this particular user and select items from a different point in time. To change the snapshot date, select one under Snapshot to the left of the search box and choose an available date and time to search that specific snapshot instead. Figure 4 has one picked, along with an example time range.

After initiating the export, you will see a prompt where you may select whether you would like to export all the items in the snapshot, or just the selected ones. After completing, the export will be available for download in the Exports tab. 

Downloading and Extracting Your Export

Once your export has completed, you can download it under the Exports tab by clicking the Download button, as shown in Figure 5. Export links will expire automatically after 30 days; however, this view also acts as a complete audit log of your exports, since we will never clear out this information.

Email Exports

Exported emails will save as the MBOX format. You will receive an MBOX file for each folder that is backed up. You can access MBOX formats with an email client like Thunderbird or converted with a third-party converter to a PST format.

Calendar Exports

Exported calendar objects will convert to the iCal format (ICS). You can access these by using a client like Outlook or Apple Calendar.

Contacts Exports

Exported contacts will convert to the VCF format. You can access these by using a client like Outlook.

Drive/Team Drive Exports

Backupify/Datto SaaS Protection will convert Google Drive/Team Drive files to their equivalent Microsoft Office format (i.e., DOCX, PPT, etc.), and compress them into a ZIP archive. Due to the proprietary nature of the Google formats, any export will cause the files to convert to those Microsoft Office equivalents automatically.
