Legacy Open Mesh: How Does PoE Work?

Follow

Question

How does PoE work?

Environment

  • Datto Access Points

Answer

Power over Ethernet (PoE) works by sending power across a couple pairs of Ethernet wires that are not being utilized in the CAT5 (or CAT6) cable, or via phantom power(802.3af).

Using PoE means won't need to run a separate power cable to the access point from a power outlet. This is advantageous if you wish to place a unit in a spot where power is not readily available, and running a power cable is cumbersome.
