SIRIS, ALTO, and NAS: EFI/GPT Instances of Windows Server 2008 Boot to Stop Code “0xc000000e” When Virtualized on A Datto Device.

Follow

Issue

When you try to virtualize a pre-R2 Windows Server 2008 system which uses EFI boot and a GPT system partition, you see the boot error, _"0xc000000e Info: An unexpected error has occurred."_

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS
  • Datto ALTO
  • Windows Server 2008

Cause

Windows Server 2008 (pre-R2) does not support booting from GPT volumes using an MBR/BIOS boot volume, which is how Datto constructs its virtual machines. This issue appears on the VM boot screen when you try to view screenshots in the device UI:

Resolution

Screenshot Verification is not supported for pre-R2 Windows Server 2008 systems using EFI boot with GPT partitions. If you are in a disaster recovery situation or need verification that your recovery points are viable, contact Datto Technical Support for assistance.
