Datto Autotask PSA: Can I use Two-Factor (Multi-Factor) Authentication in Office 365 with the MS Exchange Extension?

Follow

Question

Can I have Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enabled in my Microsoft environment and still utilize the Autotask Microsoft Exchange Extension?

Environment

  • Datto Autotask PSA

Answer

If you wish to utilize Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with the MS Exchange Extension, or you have already enabled 2FA/MFA, your existing setup will require the use of what is called an app password.

An app password is a code that gives an app or device permission to access your Office 365 account and bypasses any additional authentication such as 2FA.

We cannot provide assistance with the generation of this password. However, the following Microsoft documentation outlines the process of generating these passwords: Create an app password for Office 365 (external link).

Once you generate your app password, ensure that any and all accounts configured for this extension (including the 'sync' account on the General tab of the integration) have their app password entered rather than their usual Microsoft password.
