Reset CMOS on a Datto S3X, ALTO 2 or ALTO 3 that won't boot and displays a red light

Issue

Your Datto S3X, ALTO2, or ALTO 3 is unable to boot and is displaying a red error light.

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS 3 X1
  • Datto SIRIS 3 X2
  • Datto SIRIS 3 X4
  • Datto ALTO 2
  • Datto ALTO 3

Resolution

You can often resolve this issue by resetting the CMOS on the Datto device.

IMPORTANT  Although you can access the CMOS reset button through a hole in the baseplate, Datto recommends removing the baseplate first to avoid accidentally damaging the motherboard. Some versions of the device may be listed in a different location.

  1. Unplug the device

  2. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual energy

  3. Twist the four rubber feet with your fingers to remove them.

  4. Remove the baseplate.

Most devices will have a button underneath the hole in the baseplate as shown

The device may also have the reset button for the CMOS battery located at another place on the motherboard or have a CMOS pad which looks like;

  1. Press the CMOS reset button, if present.

    • If the pad is used on the device, short the connection by touching both sides with a paper clip for at least 5 seconds.

  2. Put the baseplate back on and screw the feet back in.

  3. Plug in the device and turn on the power.

For ALTO 3 (L3A2)

The newer ALTO 3 model (L3A2) uses a different chassis style that should not be opened to access the CMOS Reset button. The reset is accessible from the back of the unit and is clearly marked RESET. You should carefully insert a paper clip or other solid thin object into the hole to press the reset button
