Changing from ShadowSnap to Datto Windows Agent

Follow

Topic

This article explains the process of uninstalling the ShadowSnap agent on a Windows machine and installing the Datto Windows Agent.

Prerequisites

Please review the KB article on  Getting Started with the Datto Windows Agent for complete information on the agent's requirements. Note that several requirements differ from the ShadowSnap agent.

This will require a new full backup chain be created on the Datto appliance. Please ensure the Datto appliance has free space greater than the amount of protected storage on the machine in question. If needed, Archive your agent first, then delete all local data.

Warnings

  • This process requires several reboots of the protected machine.

  • Small form factor devices (Alto, X1, X2, X4) have an agent limit which must be considered - please review the article on archived agent limits.

  • Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are not supported by the latest version of the Datto Windows Agent, the legacy version must be used.

Getting started

Ensure that a backup is not in progress and pause backups on the protected machine in the remote web.

Removing the ShadowSnap agent

  • Revo Unistaller Pro is recommended it because it ensures all files and registry entries that are associated with the installation of ShadowSnap and ShadowProtect are completely removed.

  • An alternate but less-comprehensive method to remove ShadowSnap and ShadowProtect would be through the Add/Remove Programs wizard located in the Windows control panel.

Downloading and Installing Revo Uninstaller

1. Download and install Revo Uninstaller.

2. Launch the program. Locate ShadowSnap and ShadowProtect in the Revo UI.

Removing ShadowSnap

2. Revo Uninstaller will perform a full registry backup, and create a System Restore point.

3. The StorageCraft Maintenance Wizard will launch. Select Uninstall, and then click Next.

9. Click Next. When prompted, click Yes and then Finish. If Revo finds any other leftovers after the cleanup, review the files, and remove them by clicking Select All and Delete.

10. Reboot the production machine to complete the uninstall.

Installing the Datto Windows Agent

1. Download the version of the agent compatible with your Windows version:

For Windows XP & Windows Server 2003

Download the agent software from the following link: Datto Windows Agent: Legacy Installer.

For Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Above

Download the agent software from the Datto Downloads page.

2. Run the installer. You must have internet access both during the install and during the first start of the agent so that the software can retrieve certificates.

3. When the installer completes, you must reboot the production machine to finalize the installation of the agent.

Pairing the Datto Windows Agent

1. Archive the backup chain which used the ShadowSnap agent. This will permanently set this dataset to read-only, so a new backup chain can be created with the ShadowSnap agent.

2. You will be prompted to confirm archival, as this is irreversible

3. Pair the system, following the procedure for Protecting a System

4. Once the machine is paired, start a backup, and confirm that is starts successfully.
